The online classes given by the rabbi are designed to offer interactivity, and flexibility. That is, we are keeping the classes flexible enough to meet even the most demanding of schedules, while still trying to foster a sense of community around the classes. Here's how it all works.
The weekly classes are comprised of four elements: Lectures, discussion boards, slide shows, and lecture & source notes. These are posted each week, on Sunday evening. If you miss a week or two, though, don't worry -- once material is posted, you will always have access to it, and you can catch up when you have time.
The backbone of the course is the weekly lecture, which the rabbi delivers each week, specially for this class. This lecture will generally be about 45-50 minutes long, and once it is posted (usually at about 6 p.m., EST, on Sunday evenings), it will be available for you 24 hours a day to listen to at your computer, or to download from the internet. After downloading the lecture, you can play it at yce notes.
-
Slideshows. Typically, the rabbi will use powerpoint slideshows to flesh out a section of the lecture that lends itself particularly to illustration in a graphical format. You may find it helpful to view these presentations either alongside the lecture or afterwards.
-
The lecture notes will summarize the main points of the rabbi’s lecture in outline form, and you may wish to print these out and keep them handy during the lecture, to more easily follow its flow. Alternatively, you may wish to glance at them later in the week for a quick review of the main points, or to remind yourself how the various ideas fit together.
-
The source notes section will collect in one place all of the main sources quoted by the rabbi during the lecture, including biblical text as well as other material.
After you're done with the lecture (and whichever of the other background materials you'd like to avail yourself of), we invite you to log onto our discussion boards, where you can share your thoughts with fellow participants. Rabbi Fohrman will check in on the boards (usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays), and will contribute his responses to the direction of the discussion. He will do this in writing occasionally, and at other times, by posting special, short audio responses.
Keep in mind that these courses are designed to provide you with maximum flexibility. You can access all elements of the course, once each is posted, 24 hours a day. So feel free to log on to listen or contribute whenever the time is right for you.
